About Kennesaw, GA

In 2004, Kennesaw was recognized by First Lady Laura Bush as a Preserve America Community.  The designation was given for the city's efforts in preserving its heritage while promoting community revitalization and appreciation for local history. In 2007, Family Circle magazine selected Kennesaw as one of the nation's 10 Best Towns for Families. Criteria for the selection included town size (between 15,000 and 150,000 residents), a large concentration of households with an average income of $65,000, cost of living, jobs, schools, health care, air quality, green space and crime rate. In 1982, the city passed an ordinance requiring every head of house to maintain a firearm and ammunition. Those who are exempt from this law are convicted felons, those who cannot afford firearms, people with mental or physical disability preventing them from owning a firearm.

Within 50 miles of the city, there are 35 colleges, universities and vocational schools, including the Kennesaw State University, State University of West Georgia, and the Institute of Paper Science and Technology. Kennesaw is served by the Cobb County School District, which administers to 70 elementary schools, 25 middle schools, 17 high schools and 12 special schools. The district have 6 magnet programs as well as an Advanced Placement Certified Schools program.  The district educates over 106,000 students and focuses on student achievement improvement, leader development, fiscal responsibility, and strengthened relationships among the community.  As of 2007, 80% of the district's seniors took the SAT and their average score surpassed the national average.

Recreation

The Kennesaw Parks and Recreation Department offers residents many opportunities for sports, recreation, leisure classes, programs and all sorts of entertainment at 23 sites throughout the city. Residents are provided with seasonal program guides that lead to many fun events and opportunities during the year. The programs are diverse and challenge participants to build confidence while connecting them with one another, developing new skills and hobbies. The recreational activities encompass arts, crafts, fitness, health, performing arts, sports, youth camps and others. Over 100 distinct programs are provided every 4 months with convenient schedules.
